The compassionate team at Tiburon Hills Care Center will work together to help ensure our hospice patients’ last days are as comfortable as possible. We are dedicated to offering these patients dignity and respect, and we ensure that they are able to be surrounded by their loved ones during this delicate time.

What is the California End of Life Options Act (EOLOA)?

The California End of Life Option Act allows eligible adults with a terminal illness to request medical aid in dying under strict legal and medical guidelines. Participation requires meeting specific statutory requirements, which are designed to ensure informed, voluntary, and carefully evaluated decision-making.

Eligibility determinations, evaluations, and prescriptions are conducted exclusively by qualified physicians in accordance with state law. Tiburon Hills Care Center does not determine eligibility but supports individuals who have met all required criteria through their medical providers.

How Does End of Life Options Act Work?

  • Patients must make multiple requests and be evaluated by two physicians to confirm eligibility and ensure the decision is voluntary and informed.
  • When approved, the medication must be self-administered by the patient; it cannot be given by a doctor, caregiver, or facility staff.
  • As a participating facility, Tiburon Hills Care Center supports eligible patients by providing a peaceful environment for eligible individuals who have independently chosen this option under California law.

We recognize that this decision is deeply personal and made after thoughtful consideration, and we approach this aspect of care with the utmost respect, dignity, and compassion.

What Are the Qualifications?

In order to qualify for the California End of Life Option Act, the patient must:

Must be 18 years old or older.

Must be a resident in the state of California

Be capable of making and communicating their own healthcare decisions.

Be diagnosed with a terminal illness expected to end their life within six months (as confirmed by two physicians).

Be able to self-administer the prescribed medication.
